Treating osteoporosis: do bisphosphonates really increase the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw?

چکیده
Osteoporosis is a major public health problem. Osteoporotic fractures result in significant morbidity, increased mortality and have a significant economic impact on healthcare systems. This is particularly true for hip fractures. Data from a study of hip fractures among Irish postmenopausal women showed a 23.6% mortality at 2 years compared to 10.1% among controls 1 . Hip fracture can lead to a reduction in independent mobility and living. The cost per hip fracture admission in Ireland has been estimated at 14,339 2 , which is in line with estimates from other European countries 3 These figures do not include additional indirect costs such as long-term residential care from loss of independence.

Narrative [corrected] review: bisphosphonates and osteonecrosis of the jaws.
Osteonecrosis of the jaws is a recently described adverse side effect of bisphosphonate therapy. Patients with multiple myeloma and metastatic carcinoma to the skeleton who are receiving intravenous, nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates are at greatest risk for osteonecrosis of the jaws; these patients represent 94% of published cases. The mandible is more commonly affected than the maxilla (2:1...
متن کاملImpact of Bisphosphonate-related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw on Osteoporotic Patients after Dental Extraction: A Population-Based Cohort Study
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Little is currently known about the risk of developing bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). This study sought to determine the incidence of BRONJ in osteoporotic patients. We also sought to identify the nature and types of risk factors of osteonecrosis of jaw (ONJ) related to the use of oral bisphosphonates (BPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS Data from the Nat...
متن کامل[Osteonecrosis of the jaw].
The paper concerns osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). It is a rare but serious clinical condition. It can develop in patients treated in oncologic doses with bisphosphonates but also with denosumab. In osteoporosis ONJ seems to be very rare. Definition, pathogenesis, risk factors, prevention and treatment, and the frequency of ONJ are presented.
متن کاملOral Bisphosphonate Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: A Challenging Adverse Effect
Oral bisphosphonates are the most commonly prescribed antiresorptive drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis. However, there are several adverse effects associated with oral bisphosphonates including the bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). With a better understanding of this side effect, reported incidences for BRONJ in oral bisphosphonate users have increased in time. The ...
متن کاملOsteonecrosis of the jaw after oral bisphosphonate for osteoporosis.
Bisphosphonates are a common treatment for osteoporosis. Osteonecrosis of the jaw has been associated with the use of bisphosphonates, usually when they have been used parenterally to treat malignancies. Cases associated with oral bisphosphonate as a treatment for osteoporosis are less frequent. We describe two patients exhibiting the clinical manifestations of bisphosphonate-associated osteone...
